Before I go

A rainy street in Europe, two people walking with umbrellas.

Before I go,
I’ll lay out breakfast one last time.

Red strawberries on your favorite plate.

I’ll make us chamomile tea again.
It will help you sleep.

Before I go,
I’ll clean the kitchen.
All the cups put away,
the tablecloth neat
for the next meal you eat.
Without me.

Before I go,
I’ll play with you in the park once more.
Run on the grass,
bare feet and carefree.

Before I go,
I’ll sew your favorite dress.
I’ll add a white bow to the back.

Before I go,
I’ll read you a bedtime story.

I’ll sit by the bed,
waiting for you to close your eyes,
drift off to sleep.

I’ll switch off the lamp.
Close the blinds.

I’ll leave.
